Drowning Prevention for Wildlife: What Every Pool Owner Needs to Know
Finally, summer is here!
And what better way to spend warm days than by swimming in the pool?
Both humans and dogs alike can enjoy the relaxation, fun, and relief from the summer
heat that pools bring. However, we must also consider the safety and well-being of
wildlife that may inadvertently find themselves in our pools.
Drowning is a significant risk for small animals. This includes:
- Squirrels
- Chipmunks
- Opossums
- Birds
- Mice
- Lizards
- Snakes
- And more
So, we have put together a list of proactive measures anyone can take to prevent such
incidents. Read on to explore important tips and guidelines for pool owners to help
protect wildlife (and pets) from drowning.
Easy Ways to Protect Wildlife from Drowning
Install a Pool Cover
One of the most effective ways to prevent wildlife drowning is by installing a sturdy
pool cover. A properly fitted cover not only stops animals from falling into the water
but also acts as a deterrent, keeping curious critters away from the pool area
altogether. Fasten the cover tight! That way, it will support the weight of an animal if it
accidentally lands on it.
Provide Easy Escape Routes
Another tip is to offer an escape route.
Place a ramp or makeshift platform near the pool’s edges. These should be gently
sloping and have rough surfaces (to provide toe grip). Be sure to regularly check and
clean these escape routes. Another great “escape route” for an animal is a pool noodle. Attaching a pool noodle to the side of the pool and having it extend into the pool will help any animal that may fall in. This will allow the animal to swim over to the pool noodle and climb out. Maintain Pool Water Level
Third, keep water level at the right height.
If water is too low, animals struggle to climb out. But if it’s too high, they can
accidently tumble in – uh oh!
